Paradise beaches hidden in a protected natural park
Just 40 kilometers south of Lisbon lies one of Portugal's best-kept secrets: the Arrábida Natural Park. This protected area boasts some of the most stunning beaches in Portugal, with crystal-clear turquoise waters that rival the Mediterranean, dramatic limestone cliffs, and lush Mediterranean vegetation.
In 2017, Praia dos Galapinhos was voted the best beach in Europe by European Best Destinations. This tiny cove features impossibly clear water in shades of emerald and sapphire, white sand, and is sheltered by the Serra da Arrábida mountains. Access requires a short hike down from the main road, which helps keep crowds manageable.
Even more hidden than Galapinhos, Praia de Galapos requires a 20-minute walk through forest trails. Your reward is a pristine beach with water so clear you can see fish swimming around your feet. The beach is backed by towering cliffs and wild vegetation, creating a sense of complete escape from the modern world.
The mountains of Serra da Arrábida create microclimates that support rare plant species and provide stunning viewpoints. The highest point, Formosinho, offers panoramic views of the Sado estuary, Troia peninsula, and the Atlantic. The monastery of Arrábida, built in the 16th century, sits peacefully among the hills.
The park is accessible by car from Lisbon (45 minutes) or Setúbal (15 minutes). Summer parking requires reservations at some beaches. Bring water shoes as some coves have rocky entries. The best time to visit is May-June or September when temperatures are pleasant but crowds are smaller. Swimming here feels like being in a natural aquarium.
