Portuguese Grammar by CEFR Level: What to Learn and When

The most common way people waste time learning Portuguese is studying grammar in the wrong order. They meet the subjunctive in month two, panic, and conclude the language is impossible — when the subjunctive is a B1-B2 concern and they had no business being there yet.

Here is the roadmap, level by level.

A1 — The Foundations

Verbs

Present indicative of regular -ar, -er, -ir verbs

The four that carry everything: ser, estar, ter, ir

Ser vs estar — permanent versus temporary. Get this early; it never stops mattering

Structure

Articles: o, a, os, as / um, uma, uns, umas

Gender and number agreement on nouns and adjectives

Basic prepositions and their contractions: em + a = na, de + o = do

Numbers, days, months, telling the time

Questions: quem, o quê, onde, quando, como, quanto

Negation with não

The A1 rule: learn every noun with its article. A mesa, never mesa. Doing this from day one saves you years of gender errors.

A2 — Talking About the Past

This is the level that unlocks real conversation, and it is where the citizenship requirement sits.

Verbs

Pretérito perfeito simples — the completed past. Comi, fui, fiz

Pretérito imperfeito — the ongoing or habitual past. Comia, ia, fazia

Knowing which past to use — this is the genuine A2 challenge, and no shortcut exists

Near future: ir + infinitive. Vou comer

Present continuous, the Portuguese way: estar a + infinitive. Estou a comer. Note this is Portugal — Brazil says estou comendo

Reflexive verbs: chamar-se, levantar-se

Structure

Object pronouns and — the hard part — where they go. Portuguese attaches them to the end of the verb (chamo-me) far more than Brazilian Portuguese does

B1 — Expressing Ideas

Verbs

Future simple — comerei. Useful to recognise, though spoken Portuguese often prefers vou comer

Conditional — comeria. Essential for politeness and hypotheticals

Present subjunctive, introduced: after espero que, talvez, é possível que

Compound past — tenho comido, which does not mean what English speakers assume

Relative pronouns: que, quem, cujo, onde

Conditional sentences, first type: Se tiver tempo, vou.

B2 — Where Portuguese Gets Serious

The subjunctive, fully

Present, imperfect and — distinctively — future subjunctive, which barely exists in other Romance languages. Quando puderes, se quiseres

All the conjunctions that demand it: embora, para que, antes que, a menos que

The personal infinitive

Portuguese has something almost no other language has: an infinitive that conjugates. É importante nós estudarmos. Nothing in English prepares you for it, and it is one of the clearest markers of a serious learner.

C1 and C2 — Nuance

Grammar largely stops being new. What develops instead is control: choosing the subjunctive for effect rather than obligation, shifting register between a job interview and a café, handling idiom, irony and regional variation. At C2 you notice what a native speaker chose not to say.

Three Traps Specific to European Portuguese

1. Pronoun placement. Portugal favours enclisis — pronoun after the verb, chamo-me Pedro. Brazilian Portuguese fronts it, me chamo Pedro. Learn from Brazilian material and you will sound wrong in Lisbon.

2. *Estar a* + infinitive. Portugal's continuous form. Brazil's gerund construction will mark you instantly as having learned the wrong variety.

3. *Tu* is alive and well. Some courses teach você as the default because Brazil does. In Portugal, tu is used constantly with friends, family and peers, and it has its own verb forms you must learn.

The Order Matters More Than the Effort

If you take one thing from this: do not study the subjunctive before you can reliably use both past tenses. Grammar built out of order does not hold.
