What the NISS Actually Does

Freelancers: What to Expect

Independent workers file quarterly declarations and pay monthly contributions calculated from declared income. New freelancers typically benefit from an initial exemption period before contributions begin. The rules have real nuance — a session with a Portuguese accountant (contabilista) at the start is money well spent.
