Before You Fly: The Paperwork Phase

Choose your visa. For most Americans it comes down to two:

Get your NIF early. The Portuguese tax number is needed for everything: bank account, lease, utilities, even some online shopping. You can obtain one through a fiscal representative before you arrive — doing this early saves months of friction.

Open a Portuguese bank account once you have the NIF. Several banks work with non-residents, and your visa application will need it.

Months 1-3: Landing

Months 4-8: Becoming a Resident

Taxes: as a US citizen you still file with the IRS every year, wherever you live, and you may have FBAR reporting for foreign accounts. Portugal and the USA have a tax treaty that prevents most double taxation — but get a professional who knows both systems. This is not the place to improvise.

Months 9-12: Actually Living
