Booking: The Honest Reality

Appointments are booked online through the official AIMA website. Demand still far exceeds supply, so expect to wait anywhere from 1 to 6 months depending on the service and the city.

Lisbon and Porto have the longest queues by far

Smaller cities like Braga, Coimbra and Évora move much faster

Cancellation slots appear at unpredictable times — checking the portal daily genuinely works

Some offices run a spontaneous attendance queue: arrive before 8 AM and you may get a same-day slot

The Documents People Forget

The golden rule: bring originals plus two photocopies of everything. The most common reasons people are sent home:

Lease agreement not registered with Finanças — an unregistered lease is not valid proof of address

Criminal record certificate without an apostille and Portuguese translation

Missing proof of health insurance

No proof of income for the correct period
